Prof. Dr. Michael Kugler studied musicology at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich (LMU) and music education for secondary schools at Munich’s Staatliche Hochschule für Musik. After teaching in secondary schools from 1968 to 1973, he lectured in music didactics and music education at the LMU. In 1994 he completed a postdoctoral qualification in music pedagogy. Beginning in 1998 he carried out a research project in collaboration with the Orff Centre Munich on the history of the Günther-Schule for Gymnastics, Music and Dance. Documentation in German was published in 2002 as Elementarer Tanz, Elementare Musik: Die Günther-Schule München, 1924 bis 1944, with an English translation by Margaret Murray following in 2013 as Elemental Dance-Elemental Music: The Munich Günther School 1924-1944, both published by Schott. From 2007 he was associate professor of music education at the LMU and is now retired. He has published and lectured about early instrumental music, African American religious vocal music as well as historical, anthropological, educational and didactic aspects of the Jaques-Dalcroze Eurhythmics and the Orff-Schulwerk.
